Schemes of work: Science at key stage 3 Teacher's GuideSECTION ONE: SCIENCE AT KEY STAGE 3CONTENTIn the programme of study for science, the content is set out in a sequence of statements covering: The programme of study ends with a section indicating the breadth of study expected. In the scheme of work the content of the programme of study is organised into 37 teaching units. These units can be combined to make 19 double units, each designed to take about half a term. Each unit focuses on an area of science, usually from one section of the programme of study for Sc2, Sc3 or Sc4. Aspects of Sc1 are covered in all units. (A summary is provided in tables 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b and 2c in appendix 1.) In total the units cover all the statements of the programme of study (as shown in table 3 in appendix 1). Unit 9M 'Investigating scientific questions' provides further opportunities for teaching scientific enquiry. It focuses on deciding on a strategy for different types of enquiry, and indicates where similar enquiries may be found in other units. The activities in this unit could be added to other units, at any time, or the unit could form the basis for extended work towards the end of the summer term in year 9.
