The four areas of the English Framework

The new learning objectives are organised into four main areas of English. These comprise the three language modes plus language study:

  • Speaking and listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Language.

Speaking and listening

The objectives for Speaking and listening are arranged under similar headings to those in the original Framework (Listening and responding, Speaking and presenting, Group discussion and interaction, Drama, role-play and performance). The new Speaking and listening section begins with Listening and responding to give more emphasis to this strand.

Reading

Reading reflects the format used by the new programme of study, with just two main headings: Reading for meaning and Understanding the author's craft. However, a notable change is the introduction of a separate substrand about Reading and engaging with a wide variety of texts, which links to the need for a wide repertoire of opportunities, including the need to develop wide independent reading, as suggested by the range and content and curriculum opportunities sections of the programmes of study.

Writing

The renewed Framework describes writing in three strands:

  • Composition: generating ideas, planning and drafting
  • Composition: shaping and constructing language for expression and effect
  • Conventions: drawing on conventions and structures. (In this strand, learning about a range of conventions and forms is also combined with a focus on how to adapt and use these flexibly for effect.)

Language

The exploration of language change and variation, and the development of a metalanguage (the terminology we use to comment on and analyse language) are included in this area.
