Progression in English

Progression in English is complex. Levels of knowledge, skills and understanding do not increase incrementally in separation, but in an interrelated and continuous spiral of development. For this reason the curriculum must be planned so that:

  • areas of knowledge are revisited to secure the learning
  • skills are applied and consolidated in a range of contexts that are designed to promote increasing competence
  • understanding is deepened through engagement with a range of increasingly sophisticated material.

Planning schemes of work using the objectives in the renewed Framework will guarantee continuity as pupils move from year to year and key stage to key stage. This is because the Framework for secondary English has been carefully constructed to follow on from the Primary Framework and now also includes Key Stage 4.
