A key role for the subject leader is to lead a team which plans and provides a teaching programme that engages pupils, achieves high standards and aligns with the secondary National Curriculum for English. Using the Framework objectives will secure that alignment together with progression, leaving you and your department to concentrate on creating a programme that will match both the interests and the learning needs of your pupils. The Framework will also lead you to resources and guidance that can help with this task.
A second key role is monitoring and evaluating the curriculum and its impact on pupils' progress. The Framework has links to tools for assessing and tracking pupils' progress in English – Assessing pupils' progress (APP) – and to guidance on provision for those pupils who are falling behind – Progression maps.
To obtain the full benefit of the Framework it will be worth devoting time to becoming familiar with its content and how its various components (for example the strands of progression, APP assessment criteria and assessment focuses) interact with each other to support planning and teaching.
