The aims of the Framework for secondary ICT

The renewed Framework for ICT gives practical advice on meeting the National Curriculum requirements for ICT capability. It interprets the programmes of study for ICT at Key Stages 3 and 4 (2007), building on the 2002 Framework for teaching ICT capability (Years 7, 8 and 9). The renewed ICT Framework extends learning objectives into Key Stage 4.

The purposes of the ICT Framework are to:

  • provide guidance on planning and teaching to ensure effective progression, to support schools in raising standards and closing attainment gaps
  • incorporate existing guidance on day-to-day and periodic assessment and give a sharper focus to effective tracking of pupils' progress
  • increase the emphasis on the key concepts, key processes and functional skills
  • build on what pupils have learned in Key Stage 2
  • ensure that ICT skills are integrated with and taught alongside knowledge and understanding in a range of contexts
  • support planning, using a flexible electronic format
  • build on existing National Strategies resources and further develop guidance, especially on the new areas of the curriculum.
