Effective
planning and practice in assessment, target setting and pupil tracking are
integral to good teaching and effective departmental management because:
- accurate diagnostic assessment identifies
the degree of progress pupils have already made and reveals the necessary next
steps in their learning
- outcomes from pupil assessment provide
feedback for the evaluation of curriculum delivery by identifying areas where
learning is more or less successful
- target setting is a way of converting the
outcomes of assessment into explicit goals that pupils can understand and
departments can aim to meet
-
pupil
tracking identifies pupils who are not making enough progress and are at risk
of underachievement, so that the necessary intervention can be put in place.
Guidance is
available in the following areas to support high-quality, accurate assessment
of pupils' learning.
Training on pupil tracking
This short training session (55 KB) from the DVD that was
distributed in the summer 2007 subject leader development meeting could be used in a departmental meeting as a:
- follow-up to subject leader development meeting
2, which introduced Tracking for success
- free-standing package for a department that
has identified the need to review current practice and develop pupil tracking.
Tracking models
These two
Excel-based resources show different aspects of tracking which could be
incorporated into the planning and practice of a department.
