The mathematics Framework and Assessing pupils' progress (APP)

The renewed Framework for secondary mathematics and APP guidelines

The Framework for secondary mathematics is for planning teaching and learning and the APP guidelines are for assessing pupils' progress.

Making the link between learning objectives and assessment criteria supports periodic assessment, which enables teachers and subject leaders to identify key substrands or specific groups of learning objectives within the Framework to shape planning and related future assessment. In this way curricular targets derived from APP can then inform planning from the Framework and learning in the classroom.

This continuous cycle of learning, progress and assessment is shown in the diagram below.

This image is a flowchart describing the continuous cycle of learning, progress and assessment. There are five boxes. Going clockwise, the boxes are ‘Pupils’ work reviewed using APP’ leads to ‘Formative and summative information gathered’ leads to ‘Curricular targets set’ leads to ‘Links made to relevant Framework objectives’ leads to ‘Planning and teaching of revised or new units’, which leads back to the first box.

The default level ranges between APP assessment criteria and Mathematics learning objectives for Years 7, 8 and 9 are 4–6, 4–6 and 5–7 respectively.
