Components of a scheme of work

Curriculum map

The Framework provides sets of objectives to help teachers to plan for progression. They are based on the National Curriculum programme of study for the key stage. The first stage of planning is to group the objectives into sets that will form a coherent sequence of lessons. These collections, each with a title and notional time allocation, will inter-relate and some must precede others. Agreeing the sequence forms a curriculum map, the overview for each of the academic years. The units then need to be set against a Teaching calendar for that year to fit the school terms and incorporate other school dates and events.

It is likely that you have already determined the curriculum map for your scheme of work. However, it is important to remember that the new curriculum offers greater flexibility and, as you phase the implementation of the programme of study, you may revisit the map and decide that changes, such as those shown below, are needed.

  • As you track progress more closely you may find that fewer units are needed in one strand and more are needed in another.
  • As you plan for units with an emphasis on application you may find that you need to include more combined or cross-strand units.
  • As you become more aware of pupils' progress in the key processes you may need to make space in the curriculum map to include units that do not involve new content. These could provide pupils with the chance to develop their skills in the key processes.

If you are organising an overview of a year group or groups to design a curriculum map, you may wish to use the objectives in a collected form for ease of sorting and copying.  Also, you may find the documents below useful when you design or redesign your curriculum map.
