Teaching calendar

Units of work need to be set against a teaching calendar for the school year to fit the school terms and incorporate other school dates and events. The teaching sequence needs to take account of important school dates and events such as:

  • examinations and tests, and analysis of test papers
  • active examination preparation and feedback
  • extended projects and targeted intervention
  • work experience and excursions
  • access to resources and examination entry deadlines
  • departmental meetings and parents' evenings.

Use the teaching order indicated in the Curriculum map to determine how you will weave topics from different strands together in a sequence that will fit the calendar and provide a balance of topics in a term or half-term, to ensure stimulus and variety. As you incorporate aspects of mathematical application into your unit plans you may see an opportunity to link the units to events in the calendar, such as work experience or field trips.

The documents below may help you design or redesign your teaching calendar. You may also find the QCA website helpful.
