Components of a scheme of work

Unit plans

Plans for each unit of work set out the sequence and content of the unit to support teachers' day-to-day planning. As a minimum, it will include the objectives for the unit and indicate key resources that will be used. Most schemes of work will include some detailed unit plans, perhaps setting out the structure of the unit in phases and providing more information and advice on key activities. There could be more than one version of a particular unit of work for a specific year group. Different versions will accommodate varied expectations of groups of pupils, according to their prior learning. In most cases there will be noticeable commonality in structure and content of the unit. When richer and more open tasks are included, fewer adjustments should be needed for different groups of pupils.

In responding to the new curriculum the main ongoing task in a department is collaborating to develop good unit plans that incorporate rich mathematical tasks. Choose units and add detail based on the priorities you have set for the phased implementation of the new programme of study. Some examples are shown below.

  • You may re-work the algebra units in Year 7 to incorporate a greater focus on the key processes.
  • You may refine number units to include aspects of the historical and cultural roots of mathematics.
  • You may design new units in Year 7 for geometry and measures so that ICT is used more effectively as a tool for learning.

As you design new units, or develop and refine existing units, you may wish to use one of the templates below to capture and save the detail of your planning.
