The objectives are organised across Years 7 to 11 against the strands of the curriculum.
There have been some Revisions to objectives in Years 7, 8 and 9 to reflect the emphasis on key processes in the new programme of study. You will also notice new Mathematical processes and applications objectives, which replace the previous 'using and applying mathematics' objectives, together with some associated Key process maps.
Objectives for able pupils in Year 9 can now be drawn from the Year 10 or Year 11 columns. However, you will find a small number of Year 9 extension objectives to stimulate planning which more fully reflects the Key Stage 3 programme of study.
Although the presentation of the Objectives in Years 10 and 11 is new, it is a collection drawn from the objectives presented in the Mathematics planning toolkit: Key Stage 4 published in summer 2007.
Planning for progression and continuity describes how to make best use of the Mathematics learning objectives presented as part of this Framework.
In order to support planning and teaching, the previous 'using and applying mathematics' objectives in the Framework have been redrafted into new 'mathematical processes and applications' objectives. These new objectives relate to each of the key processes, recognising that the pitch will be affected by the complexity and degree of familiarity of the context, the level of technical demand and the extent to which pupils operate independently. It is envisaged that teachers will tailor these objectives for each unit of work, emphasising the particular processes or aspects of processes that are being developed in any given unit and ensuring that, over a sequence of units, all aspects are developed.
From the perspective of the classroom, the value of the key processes lies in the detail they offer through providing a vocabulary with which to describe how pupils behave as they investigate and solve particular problems. This language will help pupils to talk about their mathematics and will help teachers to design and share learning outcomes from the tasks included in sequences of lessons. Additional support for planning and teaching is provided by the accompanying Key process maps.
