Key process maps

To complement the new sets of Mathematical processes and applications objectives, some 'key process maps' are provided as a support to planning and teaching. They present a diagrammatic interpretation of the interconnections between the processes and offer a starting point from which departments could work together on these interrelationships. To make sense of the maps, it is important to reflect on particular problems and contexts and relate them to branches of the map, adjusting the detail of the map to suit your particular perspective.

The maps indicate the scope of how pupils will behave if they are actively engaged in doing mathematics. The purpose of the maps is to help you think about how to include the key processes as part of each unit of work. The Secondary mathematics planning toolkit provides the maps as adaptable templates so that teachers (and pupils) can adjust the process maps as they work on a piece of mathematics and focus on improving performance in a particular aspect. Tasks in The Key Stage 3 planning handbook provide guidance and case studies which will help you develop ways of working with the key process maps as part of teaching and learning.
