Learning and teaching

Guidance on Teaching and learning approaches (4 KB) is presented in three sections which are best read in conjunction with one another:

Some principles for effective learning

The new programmes of study in mathematics set out aims, key concepts, key processes and curriculum opportunities as an entitlement for all pupils. These are synthesised into a set of principles for effective learning to guide you when mapping out the curriculum, planning units of work and engaging with pupils in the classroom.

Some principles for effective teaching

Complementing the principles for effective learning, research has established some principles that underlie effective teaching in mathematics. The illustrated list can be used to support evaluation of current teaching approaches and stimulate departmental discussions around improving the effectiveness of teaching.

Further support

Existing National Strategies guidance on pedagogy and practice, for example on the importance of structured lessons, remains valid. This guidance is enshrined in the set of study guides that support the professional development of teachers across all subjects in secondary schools.

These principles have been designed to help you make practical steps towards developing your planning and teaching so that pupils' experience of mathematics learning is in line with the aims of the new curriculum.
