Planning for progression

The renewed Frameworks are for all pupils in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. They align with the Primary Framework (in English and mathematics) and build lines of progression through to Year 11, showing how the curriculum can be constructed to deliver steps of progression, which will enhance teaching that targets progress.

The renewed Frameworks support lessons based on ambitious learning objectives, which set challenging personal targets. They are a critical element in enabling a school or subject team to use rapid intervention to keep pupils on trajectory, and to support vigorous assessment to check on and maintain progress.

All pupils are entitled to our highest expectations and should have access to learning through the objectives. Some will need additional support and others will need to be challenged and extended. The emphasis is on entitlement, inclusion and holding pupils into learning through high expectations, attention to prior learning and effective scaffolding and differentiation.

To create the optimum sequence for the development of new and enduring learning in pupils, teachers need to select from a repertoire of strategies and techniques matched to the learning objectives. They also need to plan with a map of progression detailed enough to tell them what comes next for most pupils, including deepening and extending knowledge and understanding. The renewed Frameworks provide this support through the sequence of objectives, and the links to key National Strategies materials and guidance.
