Learning and teaching

Pupils learn effectively in science when they are engaged, their curiosity is fired, they see the relevance of science to their own lives and this is underpinned by teachers who:

  • develop quality first teaching using a range of interactive teaching strategies, in whole-class and small-group work, including demonstrating essential practical and technical skills
  • use a range of appropriate pedagogical approaches in order to engage all pupils actively in tasks and activities that enable them to make good progress
  • plan effective lessons that provide sufficient opportunities for pupils to build on their existing skills and scientific knowledge and make expected progress
  • provide extra support including Wave 2 and Wave 3 intervention (67.71 KB) to ensure that more pupils make two levels of progress in a key stage
  • create regular opportunities for pupils to:
    • develop scientific language and mental and visualisation skills through oral work and modelling
    • use and apply their understanding of key scientific ideas, either on their own or with others, with varying degrees of support
    • reflect on their learning, consider the progress they are making and identify their next steps in learning.
