Strengthening mathematics teaching and learning in Year 7
Strengthening mathematics focuses on teaching and learning in Year 7, and in particular the needs of lower-attaining pupils. You can download the course handbook and notes for departmental meetings from this site. The one-day course for mathematics teachers has two parts, each with two sessions.
- Part one focuses on providing an appropriate curriculum for lower-attaining pupils, and to help teachers make full use of Springboard 7.
- Part two aims to develop an understanding of key issues in helping pupils to acquire efficient written calculation strategies, and enables teachers to build upon pupils' existing calculation skills.
It is important that mathematics departments meet to discuss the issues raised in this course. An important feature of Strengthening mathematics teaching and learning in Year 7 is the support that is provided for the head of mathematics, together with the teacher who attended the course, to lead these discussions. The notes for departmental meetings cover the main issues raised during the course and suggest possible activities.
