Improving English pedagogy through use of ICT - Images and words

Background

This approach is linked to the 'Snapshots of the world' material (see separate case study) in that it was developed to address similar learning needs. In this case, the teacher wanted to encourage his Year 7 pupils to be more adventurous in their use of poetic language. He decided to ask pupils to select photos from Internet image libraries and add text to them in a way that commented on the image rather than purely describing it. He asked pupils to employ a range of poetic techniques with which they were already familiar (metaphor, simile etc.), but in an oblique rather than purely descriptive way.
