Improving English pedagogy through use of ICT - The Signalman

Background

This approach was developed in response to teachers reporting that a number of their Year 9 and Year 10 pupils found it difficult to define atmosphere in a piece of fiction and, as a consequence, were unable to create convincing atmosphere in their own writing.

Because the teachers felt that pupils found atmosphere easier to discuss in relation to films, it was decided to develop an approach that encouraged pupils to move between a film and the original short story on which it was based. Information and communication technology (ICT) enabled pupils to manipulate and select moving and still images with ease, creating and editing their own short 'films'.
