Improving pupils' progress with Literacy Progress Units

How the Key Stage 3 National Pilot links into our school's own priorities

Val Masson, literacy coordinator, describes how the Literacy Progress Units improved pupil progress and motivation.

Eastbury Comprehensive School is a large mixed comprehensive school with 1388 pupils on roll, located in the Borough of Barking and Dagenham in east London. Barking and Dagenham is one of the fastest improving boroughs at Key Stage 2. However, there are still significant numbers of children arriving in Eastbury School with levels of attainment below those expected for eleven year olds. Raising achievement is a priority for the school and features strongly in our development plans.

The school welcomed the Progress Units as an integral part of the drive to improve standards. We recognised the important role the Progress Units could play in providing a rapid revisiting and consolidation of previous learning.
