Effective curricular continuity and data transfer

Improving understanding of the Key Stage 2

Mel Williams, Key Stage 3 science consultant for Reading LEA, describes two borough-wide initiatives that are beginning to have a real impact on the transition of students from Key Stage 2 to 3.

A key priority throughout Reading LEA is to improve secondary school teachers’ understanding of the Key Stage 2 curriculum and how it is taught.

All staff who are teaching core subjects in Key Stage 3 have the opportunity to visit a primary school to see their subject being taught in a Year 5 or 6 classroom. Teachers have been keen to take up this opportunity, particularly to learn more about the literacy hour and the daily mathematics lesson.
