Transition and transfer

About the school

Liz Dawson, Assistant Headteacher and Director of Student Learning in Key Stages 2–3 at Joseph Swan School explains how the school has improved practices to make transition as seamless as possible, and describes the benefits felt by pupils and teachers.

In 1996 Breckenbeds Junior High School and Heathfield Senior High School amalgamated to form Joseph Swan School. Following rebuild and refurbishment, the school was designated a Technology College in September 2001, and is now at an exciting stage of development. There are 1260 students in the school including 150 in post-16 education. Students from a wide catchment area come to us from a broad range of socio-economic backgrounds, making the school truly comprehensive.

The school’s slogan is 'Valuing individual achievement' and it aims to bring out the best in all students. It ensures that students are taught in a caring and safe environment and aims to raise the achievement of each individual to the highest level possible. Students should leave Joseph Swan School with high self-esteem ready to enter society as confident and responsible citizens.
