Literacy across the Key Stage 3 curriculum

How the Literacy across the curriculum strategy links into our own school’s priorities

Juliet Stafford describes how the school has successfully implemented the Literacy across the curriculum strategy and their plans for future success.

Barr Beacon School is an oversubscribed foundation school in a rural setting on the edge of the West Midlands. The school is a large mixed, 11 to 18 comprehensive with 1465 pupils on roll. Pupil attainment in English is high with 87% of pupils achieving level 5 or above by the end of Key Stage 3.

The high standards in English are testament to the importance that is placed upon literacy within the school. Our aim is "to enable all pupils to develop during their adolescent years, in learning, in conduct and in respect for others". We recognise that literacy is a key factor in meeting this aim by providing pupils with the opportunities they need to reach their full potential.
