Implementing the Year 7 catch-up programme

About the school

Woodfield Middle School was formed in 2001 by the merger of two middle schools and is housed on one site in Redditch, Worcestershire. It has between 500 and 600 pupils on roll, with an age range of 8 to 13 years and draws from a quite diverse catchment area. There is a large number of mathematics teachers.

How the school has implemented the Year 7 catch-up programme

The year group was split into two bands and the target group for Springboard 7 was the lower of the two groups in one of these bands. The vast majority of these pupils had not achieved level 4 in their tests the previous year. The group of 27 pupils were taught by the head of mathematics for three hours a week with another member of staff teaching them for an additional hour. The attainment range within the group was quite large so differentiation was a key issue.
