The phonics project

About the school

Anne Jenkins, literacy coordinator at Greenbank Residential School, describes how they developed and implemented the Phonics Project and the results felt by both staff and pupils.

Greenbank is a residential special school that meets the needs of pupils with severe to moderate learning difficulties including pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorders. There are also pupils with Emotional Behavioural Difficulties. The pupils’ age range is from 7 to 18.

The aims of the Phonics project

The aim of the project was to develop a cohesive phonics package for pupils with knowledge of sounds and recognition of letters, but who were struggling to develop phonic skills. The package would be age appropriate and enable learning support assistants to support the teacher in the delivery of the phonics package.
