Gifted and talented - primary and secondary

This focus area provides a range of guidance, materials and resources to support local authorities (LAs), school leaders and leading teachers in meeting the needs of gifted and talented learners, including identifying and supporting the 'hidden gifted'.

Effective provision for, and identification of, gifted and talented pupils is the responsibility of all teachers; this is rooted in the classroom and integral to mainstream, high-quality day-to-day learning and teaching. It involves providing learning opportunities and focused teaching that builds on what pupils know and can do already and presents them with new challenges so that interests and intellect are stimulated and developed.

The National Strategies' gifted and talented programme is a cross-phase programme designed to provide support at LA, whole-school and classroom level for improving provision and outcomes for gifted and talented pupils in the context of school self-evaluation and improvement, Every Child Matters and the personalisation of learning for all pupils. Fundamental to the programme is the belief that provision should counteract disadvantage and prevent underachievement.

The focus is on pedagogy for personalisation and increasing challenge and opportunity in the classroom to enable all pupils to identify and develop their particular strengths, gifts or talents. Leading teachers for gifted and talented education have a key role to play in this.
