Gifted and talented - primary and secondary

Leading teachers

From autumn 2007 local authorities (LAs) have been rolling out training to leading teachers from both primary and secondary schools, so that all schools have access to a leading teacher for gifted and talented education.

Leading teachers have a key role in developing:

  • whole-school self-evaluation and improvement planning for gifted and talented pupils' education (provision, identification and outcomes)
  • effective classroom practice for meeting the needs of gifted and talented pupils.

This training offers:

  • a blended package of face-to-face and online learning that supports teachers in developing the skills, knowledge and attributes required for the role
  • tools and processes to enable leading teachers to support the development of consistently good provision within and across schools, and to evaluate the impact of this provision on pupil achievement.

The training materials include a handbook providing further support and resources to support leading teachers in carrying out their role.
