Gifted and talented - primary and secondary
Quality standards
A suite of self-evaluation tools is available to support local authorities (LAs) and schools in evaluating and deciding next steps to improve their provision for gifted and talented pupils.
These are:
- The Institutional Quality Standards (IQS)
These are designed to support improving the quality of gifted and talented education in settings, schools and colleges as a whole. The IQS have received the support of both the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and the National College for School Leadership (NCSL), and are recognised by Ofsted as the default self-evaluation tool for gifted and talented.
- The Classroom Quality Standards (CQS)
These are specifically designed to improve classroom practice. The CQS complement the whole-school self-evaluation tool for gifted and talented - the IQS - and support an in-depth look at provision within Element 2 of the IQS: 'Effective provision in the classroom'.
- The Local Authority Quality Standards (LAQS) Framework
This is based upon a set of design principles arising from discussion with LAs, including gifted and talented leads and other professionals. It is designed to capture all dimensions of effective support for gifted and talented education at LA level. This document is currently in draft and being trialled in a number of LAs.
You will find more information and an in-depth approach to improving provision for gifted and talented education using the IQS and the CQS in the National Strategies e-module on Teaching and Learning at: http://www.nationalstrategiescpd.org.uk/course/view.php?id=81
