Guidance on teaching approaches and learning outcomes for teaching Shakespeare
These resources are offered to support planning a curriculum for the teaching of Shakespeare in Years 7, 8 and 9. The Progression Statements provide guidance on what pupils can be expected to demonstrate securely in knowledge, understanding and skills when responding to Shakespeare by the end of Years 7, 8 and 9 in the four main areas of study, which are:
- character and motivation;
- ideas, themes and issues;
- the language of the text;
- text in performance.
Learning outcomes are specified for each area of study with some suggestions of activities: these stem from the appropriate teaching objectives from the Framework and will directly develop the key skills, knowledge and understanding required for the study of Shakespeare. These are only suggestions and are not a definitive list. Further ideas for teaching can be found on the Existing resources for teaching Shakespeare page.
