What is the Strengthening pedagogy with ICT initiative?
The Strengthening pedagogy with ICT initiative was launched in May 2006 as part of the Secondary National Strategy's support for embedding ICT across the curriculum. The initiative is supported by lead ICTAC consultants and an interactive DVD with scaffolded CPD resources for both whole school use and self-study.
The focus of the initiative is to bring together, in a mutually supportive way, the dual professional development imperatives to embed ICT across the curriculum and to strengthen pedagogy. The aims of Strengthening Pedagogy with ICT are therefore to:
- consider the potential for ICT to strengthen teaching and learning across the curriculum
- provide opportunities for individual reflection, collaborative work and whole school development in the use of ICT
- contribute to a coherent CPD approach to embedding ICT and strengthening pedagogy within the emerging climate of new teacher professionalism.
The Strengthening Pedagogy with ICT interactive DVD is designed to support teachers in using ICT to enhance learning and teaching in their subject. It builds on and links to the Pedagogy and Practice: Teaching and learning in secondary schools (TLSS) pack (ref. 0423-2005G) and other embedding ICT publications, in particular the ICT across the curriculum pack (ref. 0171-2004G) and the Practical Support Pack . There is a clear focus on pedagogy and how ICT can contribute and strengthen existing good practice in classrooms.

What is the Early adopters' project?
In October 2006, eight local authorities (LAs) agreed to contribute to an early adopters' project to evaluate different models of implementation of the Strengthening pedagogy with ICT initiative.
The objectives of the Early adopters' project are:
- to evaluate different models of implementation of the Strengthening pedagogy with ICT initiative across a range of LAs/schools
- to explore, share and support emerging practice across early adopters of the initiative to inform future development.
Each of the participating LAs produced a case study account of their work together with some of the resources used to supplement their project. The LAs were selected to focus upon a wide range of different contexts and models of implementation.
The project was supported nationally by a series of face-to-face meetings and an online forum. The use of the forum was also subject to evaluation of its effectiveness to offer peer-to-peer support and to gather and share feedback across the country.
The potential for using the initiative to link to accreditation routes towards Masters degrees was also investigated and one of the case studies focuses specifically on this issue.

How might I use this resource and why?
The project was set up to offer support and guidance to LAs looking to implement the Strengthening pedagogy with ICT project with teachers, departments and schools. The early adopting LAs have all travelled on a journey and share their thoughts, reflections and good ideas for moving the project forward. Each LA has approached the project from a different angle. Some LAs have worked with whole schools, some with individual teachers or departments. Each LA has a number of key foci for their projects that make them distinctive.
Clearly your circumstances will be different but the range of case studies shown will be able to give you an insight into enablers and barriers together with strategies for moving forward. Each LA has responded to the question ‘what do I wish I had known before I started the project?’ Hopefully this will give you ideas and tips for moving forward.
