Increasing pupil engagement and improving attitudes towards mathematics

Too often, mathematics in secondary schools is seen by pupils as a boring or incomprehensible subject that fails to excite their imagination or engage their interest. These materials are designed to support mathematics teachers and departments in developing approaches to teaching that are engaging and enjoyable for pupils. It is probably best to work through the materials in the order in which they are presented.

  • Video examples of successful teaching approaches are used to suggest practical approaches that can make a big difference in the classroom.
  • Subject leaders may find these materials particularly suitable for stimulating discussion in departmental meetings. The page 'Using these materials' provides further guidance.
