The unit plans produced to date have a very specific purpose. They are focused on developing teaching and learning styles and aim to raise expectations or rebalance emphasis within the strands of mathematics.
We are conscious of the fact that departments need to spend some time working collaboratively on the mini-packs in order to fully take on board the implications. It would not be appropriate or realistic to expect this amount of time to be spent on every unit of work.
We believe that working in depth on particular topics has the potential to influence the teaching of mathematics in the long-term.
Should the unit plans look like the unit plans in the mini-packs?
The shape of the plan itself, in terms of layout, may look similar but the level of detail is likely to be much less. The plans in the mini-packs took some time to produce. They aim to offer a richness of approaches and resources that teachers may not normally have time to develop.
Lesson plans
The guidance to the Framework is: 'Good teaching notes for an established unit of work, should give all teachers a helpful overview and guidance on what to teach. Experienced and successful teachers with a good sense of pacing should be able to teach a block of lessons directly from the notes, taking account of pupils' progress and response to the work, and making use of informal and formal assessment information. As teachers think through what is needed they may need little more than brief personal notes to identify how each lesson will unfold. There may, of course, be occasions when more detailed lesson plans are required for each lesson, for example, for Ofsted inspections or for demonstration lessons.'
