Digging Down - Year 8 Geography - Plate Tectonics

Aims:

  • To understand how tectonic plates move
  • To consider the ramifications of plate movement on natural features
  • To consider the ramifications of plate movement on urban areas

Web product:

  • Collaboratively made website using student-created animations to explore the relevant issues.

Case Study: Geography, Stoke Newington School:

  • This project was piloted with one class, and subsequently developed with two further classes. Students were asked to create flip-book style animations where they clearly showed how mountains and new land was formed, the effect of earthquakes and tsunami, volcanic activity, island creation. Students worked in groups both on the earth movements and on putting them into the context of an area of the world where this occurred.
