Codes - Year 8 Maths

Aims:

  • To look at different types of code; algebraic and co-ordination
  • To explore different codes in history
  • To write stories, jokes and puzzles that the user has to decipher

Web product:

  • Collaboratively made interactive coded website

Case Study 1 -  History of Codes and Puzzles, Skinners School:

  • In pairs students chose a particular type of code and developed maths problems or jokes where the text was in code. Each pair also explored one type of coding system within its historical context. They used the internet to research and developed linked web pages with images, text and sound explaining the relevant ideas.

Case Study 2  - Code Soap, Haggerston School:

  • Two separate classes worked on this project. Each class worked together as a whole class to develop a storyline where pairs would then write the next episode ending with a cliffhanger. The episodes were written in code and put on the web. Students gave the equation they had used to develop the code, and instructions on how to find the inverse equation and break the code.
