Associate Headteacher Programme (formerly the Trainee Headteacher Programme)
Summary
This scheme began in September 2001 as a DfES initiative and places well-qualified (including NPQH) experienced deputy headteachers who have the potential for headship in good schools facing challenging circumstances. The aim is to create a pool of prospective headteachers with the skills and confidence to succeed in such schools. The scheme consists of a one year placement in a suitable host school.
The foundation of the scheme is the placement itself and the learning that occurs from one-to-one mentoring and hands-on experience. In addition, NCSL provides 10 one day training sessions during the year.
Administrative Arrangements
The organisation and administration of the scheme is now carried out by NCSL and full details are available on their website at http://www.ncsl.org.uk/traineeheads
Publications
There are three CD ROMs available which feature trainees and host heads talking candidly about the scheme and their experiences of it. They are a useful source of information for individuals, schools or LAs who may wish to participate in the scheme in future. Please follow this link to order a copy of the CD ROMs.
