Vision
Mathematics & Computing Colleges will raise standards of achievement and develop further interest of the specialist subjects across the whole ability range leading to whole school improvement. Mathematics and ICT will improve the quality of teaching and learning in the specialism and develop innovative approaches to the teaching and learning of the specialist subjects. They will have a mathematically rich curriculum that embraces all aspects of school life and will develop share good practice across the curriculum, particularly through considered use of ICT.
Mathematics & Computing Colleges will raise the post-16 participation rate in mathematics and computing related subjects through promoting the full range of courses available. Colleges will also provide young people with the skills and appropriate careers guidance needed for students to progress into employment, further training or higher education related to the specialist subjects according to their individual abilities, aptitudes and ambitions.
Mathematics & Computing Colleges will be active partners in a learning society with their local schools and communities. They will be the lead centre in sharing resources as well as developing and sharing good practice across the whole community. Colleges will also actively engage and work with business and industry to promote the use of mathematics and computing outside of school.
Ethos and key characteristics
Mathematics & Computing Colleges will:
- Develop a visible mathematics and computing ethos in which the specialist subjects pervade all aspects of school life and work with the local community which includes the imaginative use of ICT, curriculum enrichment activities and involvement in national initiatives (e.g. follow-up to Professor Adrian Smith's enquiry into post-14 mathematics education) and competitions to raise standards of teaching and learning and attainment in the specialist subjects and across the curriculum.
- Provide a range of courses at all Key Stages to cater for individual needs within school and provide a range of opportunities for adult learners.
- Develop and disseminate good practice to be shared with other schools and the wider community.
- Work in partnership with local business to provide opportunities to demonstrate the relevance of mathematics & computing within a working context.
Specialist subjects
Mathematics & Computing Colleges will focus on mathematics and either computing or ICT.
Further information
222 schools in England are designated as specialist Mathematics & Computing. In addition, a further 21 schools have been designated in combined specialisms which include mathematics and computing and 15 schools have a second specialism in mathematics and computing.
