Music Colleges will raise standards of achievement and the quality of teaching and learning in music for all their learners leading to whole-school improvement. They will encourage their learners to develop a lifelong passion for, and appreciation of, music not only as composers and performers but also as audiences, technicians and critics.
Music Colleges will be inclusive by promoting enjoyment of many different musical forms and encouraging all learners to participate in a wide variety of music-making. They will identify ways in which music can improve learning in other curriculum areas.
Music Colleges will be flexible in allowing some learners to follow courses in music at their own pace. They will take a lead in using ICT as a means of enhancing learning in music and other subjects. They will enable learners to work with professionals involved in music and enjoy musical experiences outside the classroom.
Music Colleges will maximise the opportunities for young people to achieve in music and gain access to employment, further training and higher education in music They will provide a varying and continuing programme of musical performances for the enjoyment of those within the school, other schools and the local community.
Have a significant (and increasing) number of learners studying music as a subject in its own right or as part of a performing arts course.
Encourage all learners to have an interest in a broad range of musical styles - both inside and outside school.
Use the potential of music to enhance learning across the curriculum.
Place high status on vocational courses in music including music technology, recording and mixing which could appeal to a wider range of learners.
Make imaginative use of new technologies as a means of raising the quality of learning in music.
Promote high levels of participation in extra-curricular music activities in their own and partner schools, including performance groups and instrumental tuition.
Contribute to the Music Manifesto and support the delivery of wider opportunities for primary school children to learn a musical instrument.
Extend learning opportunities in music through partnerships with local, regional, national and international music-based industries and institutions.
