Study support aims to provide creative ways of engaging and supporting children in learning and evaluation has found firm evidence that participating pupils do better than expected from baseline measures in academic attainment, attitudes to school and attendance at school. It also aims to raise children's aspirations and encourage them to consider options they might not have thought of. Study support activities can also be provided for Key Stage 2 children in secondary schools easing the transition process to Key Stage 3. Study support can be a valuable aid in achieving all the goals of the Key Stage 3 National Strategy.
This aims to raise standards by strengthening teaching and learning across the curriculum for all pupils aged 11 to 14. The four key principles underpinning the strategy are:
- Expectations: establishing high expectations for all pupils and setting challenging targets for them to achieve;
- Progression: strengthening the transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 and ensuring progression in teaching and learning across Key Stage 3;
- Engagement: promoting approaches to teaching and learning that engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation;
- Transformation: strengthening teaching and learning through a programme of professional development and practical support.
Study support can assist with all these aims by enabling children to take control of their own learning, build upon classroom experiences, apply their learning and by enhancing self esteem and confidence.
