Supply teachers and temporary workers

Agency Sourced Temporary Workers in Education [TeacherNet]

A survey undertaken by the Educational Procurement Centre, working closely with the Office of Government Commerce was undertaken to examine existing supply teacher and agency arrangements available to schools across London, looking at whether the existing market is fit for purpose and delivering a quality, safety-focused and value-for-money service to schools.

Recruitment agencies across London were surveyed and asked to provide financial and qualitative information about their current services for school temporary staffing requirements. The information submitted by recruitment agencies responding to the survey, can be viewed by links, with prices quoted representing the minimum an agency will charge, per day, per role. Prices quoted are applicable to temporary workers employed from 10 March 2007.

Supply Teacher Study [VFMU]

The Value for Money Unit conducted research into the use of supply teachers in schools and detailed guidance (around 30 pages) was published in June 2002 as result. Advice is based upon information that schools have provided on their priorities and problems when using supply teachers to cover for training and unavoidable sickness absence.

The guide contains templates for policies and examples of useful handouts for schools and supply teachers, based on real working policies and handouts collected from schools, with details of possible innovative solutions and related initiatives within DCSF on supply also being provided.
